Funnily enough, my friend mentioned this to me today at lunch and I made the same comparison. Of course, so has everyone.

I almost hope they do try it. No building regulations, no environmental protection, no public services...give it a month or two before it collapses and a brainwashed refugee crash lands there and is forced to save a group of genetically modified 6-year old girls.

Actually, my first thought was of the Republic of Minerva.

Then I heard this would be oil-platform type places, and instead thought of Sealand.

Neither has worked out so well for the founders, although Sealand at least is theoretically still a going concern...
