I guess you could think it a "double secret probation" of sorts. He's continuously losing rank in this pack, and other members will notice, and not really need to much of an explanation.

Out of line any further, and he might not be killed, but he may be "cut off", the support network around him will collapse. A network that includes a mortgage company, an accounting firm, various other goods and services, all willing to do business with a man that, prior to living in this town, had apparently little in the way of personal history.

He's out of the hierarchy, decisions will be made without consulting him, and he's on the verge of finding out how Michael Westin feels.

In the modern age, this can be particularly brutal. Sure, a werewolf can talk big and bad about how independent or primal they are, but given that Zoanthropes are still human, and being one doesn't automatically make you a Luddite.

More to the point, Jack recognizes (as will be made clear next page) that with Rebecca's removal from the Cramer household, it has just become absolutely impossible to work with Gus Cramer on anything. So far as Cramer is concerned, Carla's act was about equivalent to firing on Fort Sumter, or Lexington and Concord, or the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, or to use a word we really love here, the Defenestration of Prague.

Jack knew this was coming, and so, since he knew there was no longer any hope of channeling Gus's ambitions into anything other than direct confrontation with the other pack elders, he chose to act as swiftly and decisively as possible to eliminate the direct conflict. The trade-off, of course, is that the pack now has absolutely nothing positive to offer Gus to encourage him to cooperate... or, indeed, even to maintain even the veneer of good behavior.
