And I agree- magic would spoil the comic, or at least make it completely different.

Considering that the Biology that can support the shift shown in these comics is at least three degrees away* from anything that's known, yeah, it could be magic.

So, go figure....
Perhaps: Any thing we are unable to understand, and don't even have a prayer of understanding in our respective lifetimes may not be magic, but may well be indistinguishable from magic so far as we are concerned.
