Carla seems to be trying to explain why Becca's actions were, unfortunately, within legal boundaries. Sure, Sarah could probably kill her for it, as she has 'dibs', but THAT isn't up to the pack.

It's not enforced, but at the same time, it's still 'on the books'. I doubt she LIKES the concept, and she and her husband seem to be trying to get away from 'old lore' while Gus Cramer seems intent on focusing on it, mostly because it lets him do pretty much what he wants.

The fact that she went fuzzy to tell Becca to calm down shows that she is perhaps a little stressed at the moment.

You say she's sending out mixed messages: She's the equivalent of a lawyer defending a client based on a law they don't believe in. Becca's been abused to the point where that law was one thing she could be sure of. And even then, she didn't follow through on it, even though she wasn't sure of why.

Becca's actions are terrible. She, herself, is in the running to be a terrible person, like her father, because she's been trained to be as such. But there's a glimmer of hope there, and it's possible the pack, and people who care, like, say Carla, can fix her. Unfortunately, until this point, they couldn't take action because A)Becca wouldn't speak out about her father, for whatever reason, B) because she'd broken no laws, and C)because only recently were they ABLE to take Becca from Gus by the old laws.

Let's face it: Gus keeps stirring the pot. If the Alpha does something unpopular enough, Gus could try to swoop in and steal his position by claiming to take people back to the old ways. Taking a man's daughter from him? That's unpopular. Taking a man's daughter from him because she's a rapist and he's a failure as a father? You can't really argue that point.

Plus, all this means that Gus's own abuse of Becca is probably accepted by some members of the pack because her status is below his own, even if it's sick. Which means, even if she had come out against him, she might not have been safe. And I think Gus would have been highly displeased if his daughter had tried to slip his net. The man's already physically and sexually abusing his daughter, with clear threats to keep her in line. I'm pretty sure trying to escape is not 'keeping in line'.

Carla and her husband had their hands tied before. Now, they're still tied, but at least they're tied in front of them. They can manipulate these events a bit.

I really don't know what else they CAN do with Butch. If they put her down, that doesn't do more than inconvenience Gus, because although he loses his daughter / plaything, he also loses the only person who could make him look bad in they eyes of some of the other pack members. As is, she's very likely under a two-strike plan. She's got one. Strike two, and she's done.

Becca hasn't had enough time away from her abusive setting to see the real world. Like was said before, abuse twists a person's worldview. Unless someone steps in, Becca was going to be just like Gus. And Gus was able to do so because pack law doesn't strictly forbid it. Might makes right, and remember... the pack has only recently gotten away from that very concept.

TL;DR, Carla's not happy with Becca. Very not happy. But at the same time, she's giving her some leeway because Becca's actions are consistent with her father's views. She was going to abuse Peter, and even then, some part of her accepted that it was wrong. There's hope for her. THAT is why people want to see Becca succeed in being rehabilitated. We're not rooting for a rapist. We're rooting for an abused girl to get some help. Nobody approves of her attempted rape, and that's where there seems to be some issue.

Ever notice we have never seen any of the boys in this series get violent? Will we ever? I don't exactly see this series going blood, claw and fangs as it could possibly go. But that is an edge that keeps being skirted.

In a darker version of this story I could see Sara killing Gus when he tries to 'claim' her for himself. A little to heavy for this series though and that is ok it's not broken so no need to fix it.

One of the reasons the guys don't get violent, in a sense, is because it's less funny.

Woman beating up guy, funny. (Especially if the guy is stronger)

Guy beating up woman, not funny.

Guy beating up guy: Sometimes.

Woman beating up woman: Erotic. Er...it depends.

Also, yeah. Carla's not purposely sending out mixed messages, she's trying to get the people to understand each other. I'm pretty sure this is the kind of thing where afterwards, she explains that she's trying to get Butch therapy, so she becomes less...yeah.

Also, Gus has now proven his actual acceptance of the "Old Ways". He believes it means "I get what I want." I'm almost HOPING for him to either try to 'claim' Sarah...or try to attack somebody, and get a Silver Bullet through his head.

Best anti-climax ever. He's a good villain. People love to hate him!

Part of why being Alpha is so alluring, when you're essentially asking to be top dog of a passel of superhuman sociopaths, is the power. Not only over other people, but since their sub community would have to pool resources, their assets as well.

The notion of the Werewolves being the "Lords of the Forest" could be a literal view. A way for a peasant to silently consolidate some measure of wealth. (Note that with the increased demands on their bodies, all Zoanthropes were professional criminals {poaching} in medieval Europe.)
