Actually, L4D is incredibly fun, with alot of variety. It kinda trains you to work as a team. And the fun part of the AI "Director" is you never know exactly where the next attack is coming from. I was in a group that was having our assets handed to us on a plate, and I was the worst on life (apparently, the director had decided that I was the "Meat shield".) So I just decided, "hell with it" and ran up to the point where the next attack was, only to find... no Zombies! Okay, a few, but we managed to not alert the hoard and make it to the saferoom as one group.
Left 4 Dead also has.... Chicago Ted. The man eats molotov coctails and craps pipebombs!
Oh, and is Steven Colbert the new Bing Crosby?

Not sure. Looks like it's playing by the book.
Somewhat related:
I was just watching some YouTube videos of Gears of War 2. Dear lord, is EVERY male character in that game a frat boy? There was so much testosterone I could feel it bleeding through the screen. And yes, I mean this in a bad way.
I was also watching Dead Space. Definitely a zombie survival horror game, but one of the better ones in that it was a) genuinely scary and b) *gasp* actually used literary conventions such as themes, motifs and symbolism.

I think every Gears player is a FratBoy... and just as their RL counterparts, they're overcompensating.
