There is old story among were-bears: A lucky bear and a hungry bear crossed paths in the woods. The lucky bear had just gone fishing and had two fish in his mouth he was taking home. Th hungry bear was smaller, not as skilled and was on his way to try and catch a fish. The lucky bear knew the hungry bear would have a hard time being weak from hunger so as they passed the lucky bear gave the hungry bear the smaller of the two fish. The lucky bear and the hungry bear sat together in silence as the hungry bear ate. Then they both stood and high-fived before parting ways. One day, if you're lucky, you'll get to go to a wild and reckless party like that one.

There is nothing wrong with being around people as long as those people are not babbling, drama ridden, attention whores. I lived quite happily with a room mate who rarely spoke to me for over a year. Most of the time our conversations involved grunting or shrugging. You don't have to talk someone's ear off people to be around them or even be friends. I don't understand this compulsive need people have for sharing their life stories in intimate detail with strangers.

I have a roommate and a few labmates who are like that. In all honesty, I don't do much to foster open communication with them, but it feels awkward and weird at times and I wish they'd be less taciturn.

Sometimes friendship just isn't doable with certain people. If someone is just plain too incompatible with you to the point where you find even their friendliness annoying, maybe a friendship just isn't worth the effort. You don't HAVE to be friends, but you don't HAVE to be enemies either. I don't see why this is such a hard idea for some people to grasp. Indifference is a perfectly viable option.
