Y'know, I'd have a lot more faith in the Doc if he weren't showing a complete ignorance of scientific methodology. Science has three stages. Observation, theorisation and experimentation. In a world where werewolves exist, any physical law which lycanthropic transformation appears to violate was most likely formulated by individuals who had never witnessed such a transformation, and who discounted any rumours of such as superstition. If they had been aware of such transformations being a matter of fact then they would either have had to propose a hypothetical mechanism by which a lycanthrope could bypass the theoretical law, or else dismiss the theory entirely for contradicting the observable truth.

To quote the great Sherlock Holmes, "when you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth," and science is all about the truth.

Something tells me that the traditionalists amongst the lycanthrope community not only beleive that their transformations are magical, but somehow tied into their religion-

Then again, they aren't casting spells yet,and most werewolves have no experience with wizards & other forms of magic.

Yet how do you explain what's been going on for thousands of years? There's little opportunity for them to research their heritage, without tipping their hand to the general populace. It's hard to get the research grant money to figfure out why you turn into a walking carpet every full moon.

Put reeeeal simply, people were calculating the gross tonnage capacity of boats long before Archimedes discovered the principal of displacement.
Lots of stuff has been used before it was made scientific. Undoubtedly some Were's have taken copious notes about what happens when they shift...and come up with nothing.
There are certain sciences that are derivative sciences: There's no explanation as to why something happens the way it does...until somebody in totally unrelated field makes a discovery that just happens to fit into the first area of inquiry.
As Bar-1 said, the were's are too close to the question, and getting help would blow the "Secret".
Really, as long as it works, and works reliably, there won't be much interest in the "why"...that's why medicine advances so fast in wartime, the old methods aren't saving enough wounded soldiers.
Now, if Werewolves started turning...not into Werewolves, but instead were turning into Armadillos; you can bet the process would get investigated. But until that happens, Were's are just like everybody else,
"It ain't broke...don't fix it."

You guys are both right. It's just a pet peeve of mine. I hate it when people treat science as an immutable belief system, and I hate it when scientists do it most of all. That's why I'm kind of suspicious of theoretical physics. It's a little too far removed from observable material realities. It takes too much on faith.

I feel that the reason no-one would have gotten to the bottom of the werewolf transformation yet is that the current level of understanding of physics isn't sophisticated enough to reveal the mechanism by which a werewolf acquires that extra energy or mass, which can only possibly come from an external source. If there were such a mechanism, and we did understand it, it would probably go a long way to solving the looming energy crisis before it even got off the ground.

That's one of the advantages of Fantasy: Physics work the way they should...not the way they do.
Myself, I'd like one of those ever-full wallets, where so long as you grumble about how much things cost, it's always full of money.
Or perhaps one of those pistols that always hits it's traget, no matter where it's pointed...and never runs out of bullets (I compete in IPSC and IDPA competitions...)
Or perhaps the Ever-Full fridge...It always has enough Soda and beer for everyone...
But we don't live in any of those universes. Drat. I shall have to take that up with the Landlord, next time I see HIM.....
